Club History
Parkside Football Club officially started in 1897 but previously to this they
were called Oblinagil, This was aboriginal for 'Near the park" or "beside
the park". The first ever president of Parkside Football Club was Dr.
Anderson. Dr. Anderson lived in his residence, which was called Parkside in
Moore Street, this is the origin of Parkside's name.
Parkside's first ever ground was a paddock which was named 'Newell's Paddock',
this was adjacent to the Footscray Park in Ballarat Rd.
Between the period of 1987 and 1916 Parkside won an amazing 10 premierships.
During the War (1916-1918) only social games were played.
In 1921 the greatest representative of the Parkside Football Club became involved,
our very own Herb Pascarl started running the boundary. Between 1020 to 1927
Parkside won a further 3 premierships.
Sometime during1923-1924 Parkside moved to the ground that we now use (although
Parkside was forced move to other grounds for various periods of time due to
many factors).
In 1931 the Footscray District Football League was founded, and one of the
founders was our very own Herb Pascarl. Parkside went on the win the first
ever premiership in the F.D.F.L, The club also claimed the flag in 1933, 36
and 37. This probably marks the most successful period in the life of the club,
10 flags in 17 years.
The vertical black and white stripes that Parkside are so famous for came around
in a rather confusing way. In 1932 the vice-president of Parkside decided to
start another club, about half of Parkside's 50 registered players were cleared
and so a new club was formed, the new club was called Riverside. This club
was given Parkside's Red, White and Blue colours for some reason and so Parkside
adopted their Black and White Vertical Stripes. Ironically Riverside beat Parkside
in the 1932 F.D.F.L. Grand Final. The Riverside club disbanded in 1934.
By 1938 the F.D.F.L. had ten teams which meant that Parkside was nowhere near
as dominant due to less player availability, to be blunt they didn't win a
flag from 1937 to 1948, but in 48-49 they went back to back.
Parkside clubrooms were built between 1948-49, this was due to the hard work
of many people, namely, Herb Pascarl, Ron Charles, Jack Considine and the apprentices
from Vic. Railways. These rooms were subsequently give to the boys club and
the shed next door was modified to create clubrooms better than the previous
ones. Shortly later these clubrooms were burnt to the ground and Parkside Football
Club was with out clubrooms once again.
New clubrooms were once again built but these were flooded by the Marybyrnong
River, this was our third club rooms to be lost. Never the less we built again,
higher this time and these clubrooms still stand today.
In 100 years Parkside won the Division One Seniors flag an amazing 26 times
and over all the grades we won 40 flags, quite an amazing effort. Since then
Parkside has won another Division One Seniors Flag and a Division One Women's
Senior's flag.
The most amazing statistic of all that I have found out about Parkside Football
Club is that in all its years it is still the only club ever in the History
of the F.D.F.L / W.R.F.L. Not to be relegated to Division 2, quite and accomplishment.
